AI Made Simple

You Don't Need Another Budgeting App. You Need One Spreadsheet and a Conversation.

You Don't Need Another Budgeting App. You Need One Spreadsheet and a Conversation.

Open any app store and you’ll find dozens of budgeting apps promising to fix your finances. Some link to your bank. Some charge a monthly fee. Some want you to categorize every latte you buy. And most of them get abandoned within a few weeks.

Here’s the simple truth: you don’t need an app. You need a spreadsheet — and you can build one just by talking to an AI.

The Old Way vs. The Simple Way

The old way meant hours in Excel, formulas to figure out, and a spreadsheet that looked great for a week and then never got updated again.

The simple way looks like this:

  • You connect an AI tool like ChatGPT to your Google Sheet
  • You describe what you want your budget to track — in plain, everyday language
  • The AI builds the actual spreadsheet for you, live, right where you can see it

No formulas to learn. No templates to hunt down. Just a conversation.

ChatGPT can actually build and edit a spreadsheet live. There’s an official ChatGPT add-on for Google Sheets (and Excel). You install it from the Google Workspace Marketplace, it opens as a sidebar inside your spreadsheet, and you just type what you want: “build me a budget tracker with due dates and balances.” It builds it, edits it, adds formulas — right there in the sheet.

Claude works a little differently. Connect your Google account and Claude can read your spreadsheet and help you think through what to track and how to organize it — you’d be the one entering it in. Either way, you’re getting an AI thinking partner for your budget, not just another app to manage.

What You Can Ask It to Track

Once your Google account is connected, you can tell the AI exactly what matters to you, and it builds the columns and structure for you. Think:

  • Bill names and due dates
  • Amounts owed and amounts paid
  • How many payments are left on something
  • Whether an account is current or delinquent
  • Monthly totals, categories, whatever helps you see the full picture

You’re not stuck with someone else’s idea of what a budget should look like. You’re building the one that actually makes sense for your life.

Why This Feels Different

The reason budgeting apps fail so often is they ask you to adapt to them. This flips it — the spreadsheet adapts to you, because you’re the one describing it out loud.

Update it the same way: just tell the AI what changed. “I paid off the Target card” or “add a new bill for my car insurance, due the 15th.” No app to open, no menu to dig through — the AI updates the sheet for you.

The Simplicity Is the Point

This isn’t about replacing every finance app out there. It’s about knowing you always have a free, flexible, completely personal option sitting one conversation away — one that lives in a spreadsheet you already have access to, built by simply telling an AI what you need.

That’s it. That’s the whole system. And it might be the easiest financial habit you build all year.
