I cloned myself the other day. My voice, my image — built so I can create content without stepping in front of a camera every single time.
I know that sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie. But it’s actually a really practical move, and I want to walk you through why.
What It Actually Takes to Film Yourself
Think about everything that goes into a good talking-head video. A tripod. Good lighting. A teleprompter if you’ve got one. A script you’ve actually rehearsed. And even with all of that set up right, you still have to perform.
And if you’re anything like me, you don’t love your first take. Or your second. Maybe not even your third.
Why a Clone Solves That
A clone lets you take your words — your actual ideas and information — and turn them into a finished video without the retakes, the lighting setup, or hunting for the right background. You write or say what you want to communicate once, and it renders it for you, ready to post.
To be clear — I still think being on camera as yourself matters, and I’ll keep doing it. But being able to save that time on the days you don’t have it to give? That’s valuable too.
The Tools Behind It
I built mine using two tools that are becoming pretty well known in this space:
- HeyGen — this is what handles the visual side, building a video version of you that moves and speaks naturally
- ElevenLabs — this is what handles the voice, learning how you actually sound so your clone talks like you, not like a robot
It Takes Time to Build a Good One — And That’s the Point
Here’s the part people don’t always expect: building a clone that actually looks and sounds like you takes real effort. It’s not a five-minute setup if you want it done well. I’m still refining mine right now.
But think about the trade you’re making. You spend the time once, upfront, to build one great clone — and that one clone can go on to create content again and again, long after the work of building it is done.
That’s really the whole idea behind this. Not replacing yourself. Just giving yourself a way to show up more often, without it costing you the time it used to.
